MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Microinsurance Innovation Facility (MIF) of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Accepting Applications for Fellowship Until March 31, 2011

The Microinsurance Innovation Facility (MIF), an initiative of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Social Finance Program, recently announced six new openings in its fellowship program. The fellowships aim to increase the number of qualified microinsurance professionals by providing mainstream insurance professionals with an opportunity to apply their expertise in microinsurance. The application deadline for the fellowship is March 31, 2011.

Fellows are placed with host organizations under the guidance of a mentor for a period of six to twelve months, with funding provided by MIF. A pre-requisite to apply for the fellowship is that applicants should have three years of experience in a technical capacity in the insurance sector, however university graduates from developing countries with less than three years of experience may be offered an intern fellowship in limited cases [1].

Host organizations include the Pacific Island Inclusion Programme (PFIP), which is backed by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) to increase access to financial services in the Pacific; the Emmanuel Hospital Association, which is backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in India; Naya Jeevan, a Pakistan-based microinsurance enterprise; Aseguradora Rural, the insurance arm of Guatemalan microfinance institution (MFI) Grupo Banrural; and the Sajida Foundation, a Bangladesh-based microinsurance distributor.
