The Viet Nam Microfinance Working Group issued its progress report for the first six months of the year in Ha Noi yesterday.

It also announced its action plan for the remainder of the year.

The report showed that the group has undertaken activities to ensure its legal status between January and June.

These have included meetings with the Viet Nam Association of People’s Credit Funds, the network of disabled people and officials from the Home Affairs Ministry.

Core group members have also organised numerous meetings to facilitate training programmes and implement Ford and City Foundation projects.

Now the group intends to develop a website, publish the Microfinance Bulletin No 10 – No 9 was delivered in May – and enhance its training plan.

It also intends to:

Improve its capacity based on a survey of demands that match its resources;

Provide information and organise training courses in accordance with the training plan;

Report back about its activities and provide information about information management systems to the group’s members.

The group also announced that it will this year organise Viet Nam’s first Citi Micro entrepreneurship Awards.

Its co-organisers will be the United Nations Capital Development Fund, the City Foundation and the Global Student Association.

The award was first organised in 2001 and by 2006 was held in 23 countries.

The Citi Micro entrepreneurship Awards recognise officials and entrepreneurs who excel in the management of microfinance for poverty alleviation in Viet Nam. They will be presented in Ha Noi this December.

The Viet Nam Microfinance Working Group was founded in 2004 to create a forum to allow microfinance practitioners to share their experiences; debate relevant issues and speak to policy makers with a unified voice.

Founded as an informal organisation answerable to the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations-Non Governmental Organisation Resource Centre Steering Committee in April 2003, it is open to all individuals and organisations dealing with microfinance in Viet Nam.

Its goal is: “To enhance the impact of microfinance on poverty alleviation by promoting quality and sustainablility of microfinance in Viet Nam both in the practice of institutions and in an improved enabling environment.”

Its objectives include:

Encouraging policy dialogue across relevant stakeholder organisations so as to facilitate the development of a favourable enabling environment; and

Promoting sustainable microfinance among practitioners by disseminating information, sharing lessons learned and achieving consensus on best practices for microfinance in Viet Nam.

The network includes more than 160 participants from about 80 organisations including non governmental organisations, international non governmental organisations, international organisations, donors, individuals and government agencies.

Up to 30 organisations are regularly represented at its meetings.
