This paper discusses the consequences of microlending legislation passed by the state government of Andhra Pradesh, India, in 2010. The paper argues that this legislation undermines India’s financial inclusion agenda and has a negative impact on poor people across India. The paper also examines provisions in the national government’s Microfinance Insitutions Bill of 2011 and suggests several changes. Finally, it examines the private sector’s role on facilitating the financial inclusion of India’s 450 million unbanked citizens.

Colombian microfinance institution Fundación Mundo Mujer Popayán (FMM Popayán) serves as a case study for the Smart Campaign on fair and respectful treatment of microfinance customers. In late 2008, FMM Popayán faced high delinquency. Since then, it has recognized its inflexible and sometimes offensive debt collection practices, and sought to employ best practices by re-training its collections staff.

This paper examines trends in microinsurance and ways to extend better coverage to the working poor. Recently, microinsurance has expanded rapidly in number of clients, with some estimates pegging it at 500 million poor people covered worldwide. There is now also greater diversity in stakeholders offering microinsurance, , as well as an expanding number of prodocut options. This paper also looks at trends at the Microinsurance Innovation Facility, including the expansion of knowledge-sharing and working to maintain long-term viability through meeting client needs and providing value.
