Training Program: Scaling MicroInsurance in Developing Countries

April 20-26, 2009, Chennai, India

The Center for Insurance and Risk Management (CIRM) of the Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) in Chennai, in collaboration with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, is offering a training program titled ‘Scaling Microinsurance in Developing Countries’ from April 20- 26, 2009 in Chennai, India. The main objective of the training program is to aid organizations providing microinsurance services in developing countries to design insurance contracts and to underwrite and price micro-insurance products. According to the organizers, the need for such training stems from the fact the growth of microinsurance services has not been as substantial as compared to microfinance, despite the high demand for microinsurance. The program is directed at insurers, re-insurers, large community agencies, technical support agencies, brokers etc of developing countries.

The week- long course would involve five day classroom sessions and two days of field exposure. The course will use a combination of insurance theory and case studies to address the structuring of micro insurance programs, the design of contracts, the intricacies of underwriting and pricing. The course content will include:

  • Understanding the basic insurance theory
  • Introduction to micro-insurance and other household risk management mechanisms
  • Comparison of micro-insurance providers, MFIs, non-government organizations (NGOs), stand-alone insurers, etc
  • Designing micro insurance products for health, weather, livestock, and catastrophe
  • Underwriting, mitigating moral hazard and adverse selection
  • Pricing micro-insurance with limited data

Contributors to the program content include Denis Garand, Independent Consultant of the CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance and Vijayasekar Kalvakonda and Robert Palacios of the World Bank. For an exhaustive list of the contributors to the program, please lookup the program flyer available here.

The fee for the training program is USD 2800. The fee is inclusive of boarding, lodging and field exposure. Interested applicants are required to e-mail the completed application form available here on or before March 31, 2009 to cirm.training@ifmr.ac.in.
