Cost: Participants pay 2,000 Mexican pesos + VAT. This event is free for donor agency representatives, however they must still register.

Summary of Event: This conference will bring together Mexican credit union practitioners and donor agencies from around the worldwide to discuss the role of microfinance in fighting rural poverty. It will also showcase the outreach efforts of rural credit unions and how adaptable these are to other regions.  

Background on Organizer: The World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA) are both sponsoring this event.

WOCCU consists of 49,000 credit unions with over 177 million members in 96 countries. It was incorporated in 1971 and has its headquarters in Wisconsin, USA. The mission of the WOCCU is to assist its members to efficiently and successfully develop and run credit unions worldwide, and enabling populations to access quality and affordable financial services. Credit unions are democratic, member-owned financial cooperatives that operate as not-for-profits and use excess earnings to offer members affordable loans, returns on savings, low fees and access to other banking products and services. At the end of 2007 WOCCU has Total Assets of USD 20.9 million and total liabilities of USD 16.5 million.

Event Themes and Discussion Topics: The key theme for this conference is ‘Strategies for Reaching the Underserved’. Brian Branch, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of WOCCU and Jeffrey Jones, the undersecretary of agriculture with SAGARPA, will provide the introduction and welcome.  Discussion topics will include Case Studies on creating opportunities and incorporating technology in rural areas. Two panel sessions will focus on ‘Impact, Sustainability, Strategies and Implementation of Rural Finance’ and ‘Achieving Financial, Operational and Administrative Sustainability’.
