MICROFINANCE EVENT: Second Subsistence Marketplaces Bottom-up Immersion Conference; May 24 – 28, 2019; Arusha, Tanzania

This event will allow attendees “to engage directly with urban and rural subsistence marketplaces, through conversations and observations…in rural, semi-urban and urban settings.” Small groups will interact on the following topics: Entrepreneurship, Marketplace Access, Marketplace Exclusion, Service Learning, Social Innovation, Sustainability and Women Empowerment.

Background on Organizer: The Subsistence Marketplaces Initiative was founded in 1997 by Dr Madhu Viswanathan, a professor of business at the Gies College of Business, which is part of the US-based University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The initiative conducts research and offers online courses intended to “develop and disseminate actionable knowledge for creating sustainable solutions for subsistence marketplaces.” Since 2006, the initiative has held seven conferences.

Cost: For residents of Africa, the cost to attend is USD 300, although attendees from the academic field may enjoy a rate of USD 200 and students can participate for USD 50. For residents of other continents, the general cost to attend is USD 800, with an academic rate of USD 500 and a student rate of USD 200. (The organizers requested that registrations be submitted by January 2019.)
