MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Indian Government to Restructure the National Credit Fund for Women (aka Rashtriya Mahila Kosh or RMK)

India’s Ministry of Women and Child Development is considering a proposal to restructure and expand the National Credit Fund for Women (aka Rashtriya Mahila Kosh or RMK), a national microfinance program that targets poor women.
At a recent conference, Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Krishna Tirath stated that the proposal aims to increase RMK’s budget by INR 400 crore (USD 87 million). The proposal also includes the establishment of the National Mission for Empowerment of Women, which will coordinate efforts across various ministries for the economic and social development of poor women. In a parallel development, Union Minister Tirath stated that the Ministry will establish an interministerial group in order to finalize draft legislation for the prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace.
