KNOW A MICROFINANCE REGULATOR: Central Bank Authority of Kosovo (CBAK)

Overview:
Established in 2006, the Central Banking Authority of Kosovo (CBAK) is the successor to the Banking and Payments Authority of Kosovo.
Description:
CBAK has the authority to license, supervise and regulate financial institutions in the territory of Kosovo. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) establishes the rules for the licensing, supervision and regulation of banks and financial institutions. However, CBAK has the specific duty to recommend broad policy guidelines to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN and Provisional Institutions of Self Government. The legal apparatus for regulating microfinance institutions is covered by the UNMIK regulation titled “On the Licensing of Non-Bank Microfinance Institutions in Kosovo,” regulation no. 1999/13.
