NEWS WIRE: EU to finance new micro projects in Nigeria’s Niger Delta

The European Union (EU) is to spend more than 1.5 billion naira (about 11.6 million U.S. dollars) on 335 additional micro projects in six states in Nigeria‘s oil rich yet restive Niger Delta.

A statement from the EU said on Friday that the projects would be implemented between May and October this year.

The states are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, Edo, Ondo and Rivers. The projects would increase access of more than 300 communities to basic infrastructure like water and sanitation, health, education, income generating and rural access, the statement added.

“It is expected that by the end of October 2007, a total of 1, 502 micro projects would have been completed and functioning in the six states,” the statement said.

“In the past four years, the EU has maintained a consistent leadership in providing grants and aid for the implementation of basic infrastructure projects in the Niger Delta Area,” it added.

The statement said that the goal of Micro Project Program (MPP- 6) was to improve living standards on a sustainable basis in poor communities in the states as well as reduce poverty, social tensions and crisis.

The purpose of the project, according to the EU, is to improve the quality of access to basic physical and social infrastructure, income generating opportunities and micro-finance services on a sustainable basis.

The EU MPP-6 in the six states of the Niger Delta is a five- year project to be implemented from May 2003 to May 2008.
