About University Meets Microfinance (UMM)
University Meets Microfinance (UMM) is a European initiative co-founded in 2009 by Freie Universitat Berlin (FUB) and PlaNet Finance, an international nonprofit organization established in 1998 that aims to alleviate poverty through microfinance. UMM was created with the purpose of connecting university students in Europe with microfinance professionals via seminars, lectures, workshops, mentorships, joint research, scholarships and award opportunities. The program is carried out by PlaNet Finance’s microfinance training center, PlaNet University. Since 2012, UMM has been co-financed by the German development agency Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (which is known by its German acronym BMZ) and receives additional support from the European Union, the French development agency Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the European Investment Bank Institute and the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.
