MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Belgian Investment Company for Developing Companies (BIO) Names Joris Totté as CEO

The government-owned Belgian Investment Company for Developing Companies, also known as BIO, has announced that Joris Totté will be its new CEO. Mr Totté will succeed Luuk Zonneveld, who has held the title for 11 years and has taken on the role of Chair of the Association of European Development Finance Institutions (EDFI), a Brussels-based NGO whose members include BIO and 14 similar organizations. Mr Totté has experience as an advisor to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is a co-founder of Airborn, a Belgian “cooperative investment fund for climate-positive start-ups.” He will join BIO in March 2024.

The goals of BIO include assisting low- and middle-income nations in building a robust private sector while enabling progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Among BIO’s strategies is to invest in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The institution reported EUR 662 million (USD 670 million) invested in 232 projects as of December 2021.
