Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), an effort established by former US President Bill Clinton in 2005 to bring together a community of global leaders to alleviate poverty, create a cleaner environment and increase access to health care and education, is holding its 2011 Annual Meeting in New York City, US, from September 20 to September 22, 2011. Attendance at the event is by invitation only and includes heads of state, corporate executives, directors of nonprofits and others in order that they may connect and share insights and ideas.
The 2011 CGI Annual meeting includes the first CGI Haiti Investment Workshop, which is a forum for CGI members to discuss opportunities for investment, job creation and economic development that could generate and support businesses in Haiti. After President Clinton and President Michel Martelly of the Republic of Haiti made remarks, a panel discussion was led by President Martelly; Luis Alberto Moreno, president of the US-based Inter-American Development Bank; Denis O’Brien, chairman of Digicel Group, a mobile telecommunications operator in the Caribbean; Woong-Ki Kim, chairman of Sae-A Trading Company, a Korean textile manufacturer and exporter; and Magalie Dresse, owner of Caribbean Craft, a Haiti-based fair trade handicrafts manufacturer.
Other topics for the 2011 CGI Annual Meeting include: generating employment for the 21st century; sustainable consumption; and scaling programs that empower girls and women.
