Lavenia Baro, manager of the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) Microfinance Unit, reportedly has stated that a recent financial literacy session focusing on small businesses “will help participants manage their weekly cash flow.” Participants were also counseled on marketing and microfinance initiatives for small businesses. Participants are given access to a microfinance savings account and will be monitored weekly. Successful businesses are encouraged to expand through loans, while those with failed projects are advised to rebuild with their savings. Microfinance programs currently offered include “a saving facility, loan expansion for business, financial literacy and basic business planning” [1]. The number of participants was not disclosed.
As of 2010, one microfinance institution has submitted data to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX). According to MIX, South Pacific Business Development Fiji (SPBD Fiji), a microfinance institution in Fiji, has total assets of USD 381,923, a gross loan portfolio of USD 197,229 and approximately 2,300 loan clients.
