The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private-investment arm of the World Bank Group, has agreed to loan EUR 22.5 million (USD 32.3 million) to the Romanian branch of Garanti Bank “to help finance small and medium businesses in Romania, especially those owned or managed by women entrepreneurs.” This is characterized as the first IFC loan specifically catered to women in Eastern Europe [1].
As of 2010, Garanti Bank has 800 branches, approximately nine million customers, total assets of USD 78 billion, and operations in seven countries. IFC has investments in Romania of USD 632 million focused on agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, healthcare and financial markets.
