Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), a Japanese financial services company, reportedly announced plans to purchase a 12.25-percent equity stake consisting of approximately 27.6 million shares in Acleda Bank (Acleda), a Cambodian commercial bank, for a total cost of USD 110 million. Currently the equity stake is owned by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private-investment arm of the US-based World Bank Group. The transaction was approved by the National Bank of Cambodia on August 12, 2014, and is scheduled to take place in September 2014.
In a statement, Mr Adel Meer, IFC’s financial institutions group manager for East Asia and the Pacific, said that “with its financial strength and expertise, we believe Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation is a strong strategic partner that can support Acleda’s continued long-term growth and contribute to Cambodia’s economic development and job creation”[1].
The purchase of the equity stake by SMBC concludes a 15-year partnership between IFC and Acleda. It is expected that SMBC will help Acleda acquire corporate clients in the future.
As of June 30, 2014, Acleda reported total assets of USD 2.7 billion, loans and advances to customers of USD 1.6 billion and deposits of USD 1.7 billion. As of March 31, 2014, SMBC reported total assets of JPY 136 trillion (USD 1.3 trillion) and deposits of JPY 84 trillion. IFC has 184 member countries and reported total assets of USD 77.5 billion as of fiscal year-end 2013.
