MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Khushali Microfinance Bank, Sindh Graduates Association Partner on Financial, Vocational Education for Women in Rural Pakistan

Pakistan’s Khushali Microfinance Bank recently initiated a collaboration with Sindh Graduates Association (SGA), an organization mobilizing university graduates in the Pakistani province of Sindh, on a program intended to increase women’s living standards. In particular, the programme targets the female population in the Sindh village of Mirpurkhas with training in tailoring and financial topics such as how to use banking services. Ghalib Nishtar, the President of Khushali, expressed the hope that the programme will enable women “to be independent and generate sufficient incomes to support their families.”

Khushali was founded in 2000 and initially operated by the State Bank of Pakistan, the country’s central banking authority. In 2008, the microbank was converted into a public limited company. Khushali offers services such as loans, savings, insurance and mobile banking. It operated 240 branches and reported total assets of PKR 120 billion (USD 581 million) as of March 2022.

Founded in 1972, SGA is an NGO with approximately 9,000 volunteers and 125 branches across Sindh. Its goal is to improve the living conditions of marginalized communities. SGA’s donors include the World Bank, UK-based Oxfam and the UN International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
