The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), the trade union of United States Major League Baseball players, recently pledged USD 100,000 to Esperanza International, an organization that aims to alleviate poverty with social programs and microcredit, to aid in the reconstruction of Haiti. The donation will come from the MLBPA’s Players Trust, a fund created by the MLBPA.
Curtis Granderson, a representative of the MLBPA, stated that, “Haiti faces a long road to recovery, and we want to do our part to support the humanitarian efforts of those nonprofits committed to this cause” [1]. David Valle, the President of Esperanza International accepted the contribution, saying that “Esperanza is honored to serve alongside Major League Baseball players in this Herculean effort of assisting those in great need in Haiti” [1].

About Esperanza International:
Esperanza International is a nonprofit organization, established in 1985, that aims to “to develop and implement programs, such as microcredit loans and social workers to help aid [impoverished] families” in Mexico [2]. Its various projects include house building, providing primary health care, microcredit, and social service programs. Esperanza International primarily operates in Mexico but extended its reach to Haiti in 2005. Esperanza International does not report to the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX).
