MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: M&G Acquiring Majority Stake in Impact Investment Firm responsAbility

M&G, a UK-based holding company seeking “to help our customers invest for a more sustainable future for the planet and society,” recently moved to acquire 90 percent of responsAbility Investments of Switzerland. ResponsAbility invests in low- and middle-income countries with the aim of increasing financial inclusion, supporting agriculture deemed sustainable and reducing the effects of climate change. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval, and M&G is expected to acquire the remaining 10-percent stake of responsAbility shortly.

M&G CEO John Foley stated, “This acquisition strengthens M&G’s position in the rapidly growing market for sustainable investments, especially in the exciting area of emerging markets. It also accelerates the growth of our private assets franchise and augments our European institutional distribution.”

Rochus Mommartz, the CEO of responsAbility, said, “We are excited to join forces with M&G, as this will bring our vision for impact investing to the next level. M&G’s financial strength, distribution network and its strong commitment to sustainability will accelerate our endeavors to meet the massive unmet demand in developing countries and the need for climate finance.”

Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Zurich, responsAbility has private debt and private equity investments deployed in 80 countries. As of 2021, the firm had eight offices and total assets of USD 3.7 billion.

M&G has 5,500 employees in 20 locations managing assets valued at GBP 370 billion (USD 495 billion) as of June 2021.
