The Microinsurance Network, a member-based organization that works to advance insurance in poor countries, recently published a summary of an online discussion on public-private partnerships (PPPs) addressing themes including the role of governments in enabling PPPs, the merits and drawbacks of subsidizing the private sector, how to define success in microinsurance PPPs and current gaps in consumer protection and institutional capacity. Two case studies of PPPs in Colombia and Indonesia are also offered.
The discussion, which collected 70 comments from experts in the public and private sectors, included the need for a systemic and strategic approach, developing the entire PPP value chain, the importance of dedicated and efficient PPP management and the documentation of good practices.
A more detailed and illustrative paper on PPPs and microinsurance is scheduled for publication by the Microinsurance Network at an undisclosed date.
