Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) Mobile Money, an arm of South African telecommunications company MTN Group, reportedly has partnered with Mobile Financial Services (MFS) Africa, a for-profit firm based in Mauritius, to launch KwikAdvance in Ghana. KwikAdvance allows MTN Mobile Money users to request advances of up to 40 percent of the amount due in their next paycheck. KwikAdvance users are required to repay the advances, with an undisclosed amount of interest, within 30 days.
As of 2013, it is reported that 93 percent of Ghanaians have access to mobile phones, and approximately 90 percent of business transitions remain cash-based. According to Ghana’s National Communication Authority, a government agency in charge of regulating communication services, there are approximately 11.9 million MTN customers in Ghana, representing 45 percent of the mobile phone market. As of December 31, 2011, MTN reports total assets of ZAR 181 billion (USD 19.6 billion), with approximately 165 million subscribers in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East. MFS operates in 14 countries in Africa as of 2013.
