The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the business information arm of the Economist magazine, released its Global Microscope on the Microfinance Business Environment 2010 survey, placing Peru as the country that is most friendly to microfinance businesses for the third year in a row, followed by the Philippines and Bolivia.
Latin American countries occupy five of the top ten spots, while Venezuela finishes last of the 54 countries evaluated.
This survey is the EIU?s second annual effort to evaluate and benchmark developing countries on the business conditions for privately provided microfinance services. The EIU points out that in addition to GDP growth and political stability, political will and regulatory capacity to support private microfinance institutions (MFIs) are also factors that are important to a healthy microfinance sector.
The top ten this year is:
1. Peru
2. Philippines
3. Bolivia
4. Ghana
5. Pakistan
6. Ecuador
7. El Salvador
8. India
9. Colombia
10. Kenya
