MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Union Banka to Lend $950k to Microcredit Foundation Prizma of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Union Banka, a financial institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina, recently approved a BAM 1.5 million (USD 958,000) loan exposure to the Microcredit Foundation Prizma, a microfinance institution (MFI) in the same country. BAM 1 million (USD 638,000) of the deal has been approved with a maturity described as “long-term,” while the remainder of the funds are to be available on a revolving basis. This reportedly is the first microfinance sector loan approved by Union Banka, which is publicly traded and partially owned by the government. Further details on the loan have not been released.

Union Banka reported total assets of BAM 147 million (USD 94 million) as of year-end 2009. The Microcredit Foundation Prizma reported to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 72.3 million, a gross loan portfolio of USD 64.4 million and approximately 69,000 borrowers as of December 31, 2011.

As of December 31, 2011, Prizma reported to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) total assets of USD 72.3 million, a gross loan portfolio of USD 64.4 million, return on assets (ROA) of 1.85 percent, return on equity (ROE) of 9.44 percent and 69,000 active borrowers.
