Speakers at this year’s event will explore strategies to expand the growth and the accessibility of microinsurance services in emerging economies. Although the details of this year’s agenda are still under development, last year’s edition covered topics such as the role of microinsurance in economic development and digital technologies for microinsurance. Session titles included The Landscape of Microinsurance in Latin America and the Caribbean, Agricultural Information and Crop Insurance, and Innovations in Microinsurance: Matching Customer Needs.
Background on Organizer: Munich Re Foundation was established in 2005 by Munich Re, a German reinsurance company. The foundation aims to find solutions to problems relating to population growth, globalization, wealth inequality and the environment. It does this by organizing projects and events as well as publishing material related to climate change, disaster prevention, microinsurance, and water quality and supply management. Munich Re reported EUR 267 billion (USD 329 billion) in total assets as of March 31, 2018. Munich Re Foundation does not disclose its financial information.
Originally established in 2002 as the CGAP (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor) Working Group on Microinsurance, the Microinsurance Network was spun off as an independent membership organization in 2009. Based in Luxembourg, the network aims to promote the development of insurance products for low-income populations by providing a platform for information sharing and stakeholder coordination. As of 2018, it has 70 institutional members and 30 individual members representing approximately 40 countries.
Established in 2009 and based in Zambia, the Microinsurance Technical Advisory Group (TAG) is a nonprofit network of 18 professionals and organizations “committed to the development of a vibrant and inclusive insurance sector in Zambia.” TAG was created as an outgrowth of a study of Zambia’s microinsurance industry by the South Africa-based Finmark Trust, the UN Capital Development Fund, and the Impact Insurance Facility of the UN’s International Labour Organisation. TAG’s core activities include advocacy, consumer education, professional development and coordinating industry events.
Cost: The registration fee for representatives of international organizations is USD 1,390, and rate for those from Zambia is USD 490. International NGOs may register for USD 790 per person, and members of the Insurers Association of Zambia may register for USD 390. Additional tiered discounts apply for registrations completed by September 1 and September 30.
