MICROFINANCE EVENT: Africa Impact Summit; July 13-14, 2023; Cape Town, South Africa

With a focus on impact investing, this event will explore how to build markets in Africa as well as pipeline opportunities and challenges. The agenda includes sessions such as: (1) Investing in SMEs [Small and Medium-sized Enterprises] and Start-ups; (2) Systems and Design Thinking for Finance Practitioners; (3) The Role of Frontier Technologies in Enabling Impact Investing; (4) Climate Finance in Africa; (5) Accelerating Catalytic Capital Mobilization and Deployment in Africa’s Priority Sectors; and (6) Tackling Systemic Issues of Poverty and Unemployment in Africa.

Background on Organizers: The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) seeks to support SGBs in low- and moderate-income economies with the aim of reducing poverty. ANDE was founded in 2009 by the Aspen Institute, a US-based nonprofit with the mission of propeling change through leadership, “realizing a free, just, and equitable society.” ANDE has eight chapters spanning Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Founded in 2011, the Bertha Centre is a unit of the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business that aims to contribute to social equity and entrepreneurship through “educating, researching, convening, catalyzing and advocating with a systems lens on social innovation.”

Founded in 2015, the UK-based Global Steering Group for Impact Investment was registered as a charity in 2017. The organization promotes impact investment and entrepreneurship that addresses environmental and social issues in collaboration with its 30 regional and national advisory boards for impact investing (NABIIs). Among these are three participating in organizing this event, Impact Investing Ghana, Nigerian NABII and NABII Zambia.

Impact Investing South Africa seeks to promote the efficient use of capital “that optimizes financial, social and environmental returns.” Among its working groups are three that focus on supply of capital, demand for capital and measuring impact.

Cost: The standard fee to attend the event in person is ZAR 5,500 (USD 310), but discounts are on offer for those who fit various criteria. The fee for a virtual pass is ZAR 1,655 (USD 90). Both types of tickets are available at a 20-percent discount for groups of 5 or more. Registration is encouraged by July 4.
