Summary of Event: This event will showcase the findings from Diagnostic to Action: Microfinance in Africa, a joint study by the Africa Microfinance Action Forum (AMAF) and Women’s World Banking (WWB) conducted in partnership with the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development, the Government of Luxembourg, ADA (Appui au développement autonome), and Care.  The conference will facilitate dialogue between local and international stakeholders, and provide the opportunity for participants to present strategies for advancing the microfinance sector in Africa.

Background on Organizers:

WWB is a global network of 54 microfinance providers and banks, working in 30 countries to bring financial products and services to low-income entrepreneurs, especially women.  WWB’s team of 40 microfinance professionals works with member institutions to develop innovative business strategies, strengthen their organizations, and create products that best meet the needs of the poor in the communities they serve. The WWB network serves over 21 million micro-entrepreneurs.

AMAF is a think tank and advocacy group of African leaders who are committed to the advancement of microfinance in Africa.  AMAF contributes and mobilizes resources to build a movement for more accountable approaches to microfinance development.

The event is also sponsored by Casa Africa, African-Spanish Women’s Network for a Better World and UNIFEM, and ADA.

Event Themes and Discussion Topics:

The study under discussion, Diagnostic to Action: Microfinance in Africa, is an in-depth look at the African microfinance sector. The report explores the obstacles preventing poor African communities from accessing financial products and services, including illnesses such as AIDS, isolation, low population density and a lack of basic services and infrastructure.  The study also outlines the challenges facing microfinance providers in their efforts to deliver microfinance products and services, from insufficient financial resources to a lack of enabling regulatory frameworks, qualified human resources and industry expertise.
