Cost: The fees for Ghanaian participants are GHS 150 (USD 76) for the conference only (April 24), GHS 350 (USD 178) for the workshop only (April 25-26) or GHS 450 (USD 229) to attend both. The fees for international participants are USD 150, 300 and 400, respectively. There are discounts of USD 50 to USD 100 for registering by April 10.
Summary of Event: The event seeks to bring together practitioners to discuss best practices in microfinance and how to improve the sector to better “meet its original objectives in the Africa and worldwide economy.” The conference will feature keynote addresses and open discussion forums and the workshop will focus on training and skill development in subjects such as managing a sustainable microfinance business, strategies in managing micro-funds/cash flows and regulatory and supervisory challenges.
Background on Organizers: The African Center for Peace Building (AFCOPB) is an NGO based in Ghana that seeks to promote sustainable peace and development in Africa. AFCOPB organizes events, workshops and awareness programs on topics such as conflict prevention, management and resolution; the promotion of human rights; peace education; and youth development. The Bank of Ghana has regulatory and supervisory authority in Ghana over banking and financial institutions including rural and community banks, savings and loan companies, credit unions and cooperatives. However, nonprofit organizations in Ghana are not regulated by any government agency.
About the Presenters: Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom is the founder of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) of Ghana. His former positions include serving as Ghana’s Energy Minister, Minister for Economic Planning and Regional Cooperation, Minister for Public Sector Reform and chairman of the board for the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), a program sponsored by the Ghanaen government to implement Ghana’s sustainable development compact with the US-based Millennium Challenge Corporation. Dr William K. Derban is managing director of UAE-based Derban Consulting and the architect and former head of the microbanking program at the UK-Based financial service provider Barclays.
