MICROFINANCE EVENT: Foromic: Reinventing Inclusion; October 29 – 31, 2018; Barranquilla, Colombia

Organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group and the government of Colombia, this year’s Foromic is themed “Reinventing Inclusion.” Speakers will discuss how new business models and technologies are affecting financial inclusion and entrepreneurial opportunity in Latin America. Although the detailed agenda for the event is still under development, the organizers have cited the following general topics that will be addressed by conference sessions and related IDB publications: (1) “Finance in Evolution,” which will draw from case studies of financial inclusion in Colombia and the Dominican Republic, innovations in the Latin American financial technology (fintech) sector, and regulations governing fintech in the region; (2) “Business at the Forefront,” which encompasses policies relating to broadband Internet in Latin America, innovations in the region’s agricultural technology (agritech) sector and the development of “intelligent transportation systems;” and (3) “New Skills Development,” which includes new technology and its effects on labor demand as well as IDB Group’s Better Job Index, a tool offering country-level data on metrics such as wage growth and unemployment rates.

Background on Organizer: IDB Group is a US-based multilateral institution that was founded in 1959 and has 48 member countries. It works with governments, companies and NGOs to support sectors such as health, education, renewable energy, transportation and telecommunications with funding, technical assistance and research. IDB operates satellite offices in France, Japan and all 26 member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. During 2017, the group approved loans totaling USD 13 billion and reported USD 89 billion in loans outstanding.

Cost: Registration costs USD 500 during July and increases to USD 600 starting August 1.
