Summary of event: The Mobile Money Summit 2009 will focus on the mobile money industry, and how the sector has evolved in the past year. The Summit will highlight the realities behind the business models and existing deployments and look at what needs adjusting as the industry moves forward.
Event themes and topics: The major themes include: 1) progress: how the industry has developed in the past 12 months; 2) financial inclusion: can the industry connect the unbanked; 3) go-to-market: is there money in mobile money; and 4) the next 100 million: what innovations will emerge to tap the next 100 million consumers.
Day 1: Executive Regulatory Training
Day 2: Update on commercial mobile financial services deployments globally and a look into the progress made on commitments at Mobile Money Summit 2008 in Cairo.
Day 3: Participants will have the choice to select between sessions in the Regulatory Landscape Track or Mobile Money Track.
Day 4: Leadership forum (by invitation only)
Background on organizers: The event is organized by Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), Department for International Development (DFID), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA). CGAP is an independent policy and research center, housed at the World Bank, which provides microfinance market intelligence, promotes industry standards, and offers advisory services to governments, microfinance providers, donors, and investors. DFID is part of the UK government that manages Britain’s aid to poor countries and works to get rid of extreme poverty. IFC is a member of the World Bank Group, and creates opportunity for people to escape poverty and improve their lives. Established in 1982, GSMA unites nearly 800 of the world’s mobile operators, as well as more than 200 companies in the broader mobile industry.
