Summary of event: The goal of the Microfinance Summit Nepal 2008 is to unite microfinance stakeholders in Nepal in order to express their collective commitment to building a strong and inclusive microfinance sector and to increase outreach to all households in need of microfinance services through the development of a joint microfinance strategy and action plan.
For an additional breakdown of the summary please see here.
The objectives of the Summit are to:
Facilitate a broad dialogue among all stakeholders involved in the field of microfinance: policymakers and regulators, public institutions concerned with the microfinance sector (including government-owned banks), microfinance practitioners, commercial banks and interested financial sector institutions (including insurance agencies, remittance service providers), technical support providers and training institutes, as well as international donors;
Create a common understanding among all stakeholders about the current status of microfinance and to jointly produce an overview on current outreach segmented by target groups (geographical, gender, ethnic, caste, etc.). As a second step develop outreach targets for individual institutions. Discuss the issues for further development of the sector and to develop strategies to overcome any shortcomings;
Share information on current microfinance approaches applied in Nepal and/or internationally provides participants with up-to-date information on trends in microfinance and innovations (both technical and strategic) now being tested worldwide;
Raise public awareness in Nepal about microfinance as well as to convince policymakers of the importance of the microfinance sector in order to make microfinance a priority in the national development strategy;
Show the world (through presentation of the results of the Microfinance Summit Nepal at the regional Microcredit Summit) the achievements of Nepal’s microfinance sector and the commitment of its stakeholders to further contribute to the development of microfinance as a tool for poverty reduction and an engine of economic growth.
Background of the Organizer:
The Nepal Microfinance Summit was organized after the 2006 Global Microcredit Summit held in Halifax, Canada and organized by the Microcredit Summit Campaign (MCS) Secretariat based in Washington, DC. For more information on MCS, to join their Campaign and/or to submit an Institutional Action Plan please go to their website at: www.microcreditsummit.org or email MCS at info@microcreditsummit.org. No additional information is provided.
Who can attend: Policy makers, practitioners (microfinance development banks, FINGOs and saving and credit cooperatives), promoters, professionals, learners, experts of microfinance and development agencies, NGOs and INGOs representatives can participate at the Summit.
The Expected Results of the Program are as follows:
There are a number of major outputs to be produced before, during and after the Summit.
In the buildup to the Summit stakeholders will be asked to update their outreach information as well as to prepare ideas for their action plans and outreach targets. The World Bank is in the process of carrying out a mapping of all microfinance institutions in Nepal. This information will be presented to the Summits participants.
During the Summit a joint declaration will be prepared which will incorporate participant suggestions for the improvement of the microfinance sector in Nepal. This document will have two major aims: first, providing policymakers with feedback on how microfinance stakeholders envision the future development of the sector. These suggestions can then be reflected in the Government’s strategy papers and policies. Secondly, it is to show the commitment of the stakeholders to jointly strive to increase the outreach of microfinance services. This written commitment will provide the basis for follow-up activities and monitoring.
After the Summit the proceedings will be published in order to provide all stakeholders with what actions the various stakeholders have committed themselves too. The publication or abstract will also serve as a tool to further raise public awareness. Extracts from the publication will be used by the Micro-credit Summit to present the results at the global forum.
Outcome
These Summit outputs are aimed at producing a number of outcomes among the different stakeholders.
The first outcome will be that stakeholders see themselves as an integral part of the microfinance movement in Nepal and that, even though some of the institutions involved are in a competitive situation vis-à-vis other institutions, all stakeholders will recognize the need to work together, or at least coordinate with each other, in order to further develop the microfinance sector.
The second outcome is that stakeholders can plan and implement their strategies and activities based on an improved knowledge of the status of microfinance in Nepal and worldwide. This means that institutional development plans of the individual stakeholders will be based on a sound understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses and the opportunities and threats of Nepal’s microfinance market.
The third outcome is that policymakers and regulators have a much better understanding of what the sector needs to further grow. This enables them to develop strategies and policies which are understood and supported by microfinance practitioners. In addition, the event creates mutual trust between the public and the private sector by openly showing each other’s capabilities and limitations.
A fourth outcome is the raised awareness in Nepal and internationally about the efforts all stakeholders are making to better the living conditions of the poor in Nepal. This will – hopefully – also manifest itself in raised funds available for microfinance development either through local authorities and/or private initiatives as well as through international donor organizations.
Impact
The impact of sound new microfinance policies, well designed strategies and increased budgets for institutional development and training, improved knowledge on state-of-the-art in microfinance and on product and technology innovations, and broader support for microfinance from the public, the private sector and the international community will result in the emergence of sounder microfinance institutions and networks as well as stronger microfinance support structures.
In turn, this will lead to easier access of Nepal’s poor to affordable microfinance services provided on a sustainable basis. The goal must be to provide every household in Nepal with access to financial services.
