About the Event:
The Social Capital Performance (SPM) Network is hosting this week-long online brainstorming session focused on the challenges of group lending and how microfinance institutions (MFIs) should address these issues. Ideas from the session will be used to help the SPM Network define the agenda for its meeting at the Global Microcredit Summit 2011 to be held in November in Valladolid, Spain. To lead the discussions, the network has invited: Carmen Velasco (Co-Founder and Executive Director, Pro Mujer, Bolivia and Peru), Malcolm Harper (Chairman of Microcredit Rating International Limited and Emeritus Professor, Cranfield School of Management, UK), Inez Murray (Executive Vice President of Program & Network Management, Women’s World Banking, New York, USA) and Imran Matin (Deputy Executive Director at BRAC International, Bangladesh).
Topics for debate will include:
-Over-indebtedness: Whether group lending methodologies can evolve to protect against over-indebtedness without undermining the role of group solidarity
-Relevance of groups: How can MFIs make groups relevant and valuable to clients and also effective in achieving specific goals?
-Risk management: How can MFIs ensure that groups create rather than destroy social capital?
About Imp-Act Consortium and Imp-Act SPM Network
Established in 2006 and housed at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex in the UK, the Imp-Act Consortium was formed by seven organizations to collaborate on social performance management (SPM). Since then, the consortium has developed resources for the training of trainers, mentoring guidelines and microfinance institution management. As of 2011, the consortium consists of nine members and is supported by donor funding from organizations including the Ford Foundation, Concern Worldwide, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and MicroNed. According to the Social Performance Task Force (SPTF), an initiative of CGAP (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor), social performance includes operating “in line with accepted social values that relate to serving larger numbers of poor and excluded people.” Imp-Act SPM Network is a community space created by the Imp-Act Consortium to connect individuals and organizations committed to managing and achieving social performance in microfinance.
