Tamkeen, an agency supporting the private sector that is backed by the government of Bahrain, and Family Bank, a nonprofit Bahraini microfinance bank, recently signed an agreement whereby Tamkeen will fund an increase of BHD 1 million (USD 2.6 million) in the portfolio of the Microfinance Support Scheme, a joint program of the two organizations that offers financing services to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

This report is the latest iteration of an annual assessment issued by the Microcredit Summit Campaign, a project launched in 1997 by the Results Educational Fund (REF), a US-based nonprofit that seeks to reduce poverty. The report indicates that the number of people living in extreme poverty with access to financial services has declined from 138 million in 2010 to 125 million in 2011, the first decrease since the organization began compiling the report in 1998.
